Q&A
Q. Can you share a little about the history of Variety - the Children's Charity and the mission that drives your work today?
A. Since 1928, Variety – the Children’s Charity International has been at the forefront of supporting children who face disability, illness, and disadvantage. Our story began when a group of entertainers in Pittsburgh found and cared for an abandoned baby girl in a theater auditorium. Determined to help, they began raising funds for Catherine’s care – sparking a movement of generosity and action that grew into a global network! Since Catherine, we’ve provided over $2 billion in aid and support to millions more children around the world. From our grassroots beginnings to a network of 38 branch locations and associations across 11 countries, we’re so proud to share that we’ve been able to impact millions of lives from around the world!

Q. What programs or resources does Variety provide for children around the world, and what impact have you seen in the communities you serve?
A. At Variety, we’re not just imagining a world without limits - we’re helping build it one child, one family, and one community at a time. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach; it’s a responsive network of care that grows and adapts to whatever life throws their way.
To provide meaningful and lasting support, we have developed a range of programs designed to address both immediate challenges and long-term goals. Our Care Program delivers life-saving medical support, while our Freedom Program provides specialized mobility equipment to help children navigate their world independently. Through our Future Program, we empower children with education, skill development, and community support to build brighter futures. Additionally, the Variety International Children’s Fund (VICF) extends vital resources to children in underserved areas where a Variety branch is not present. Together, these programs have helped improve the lives of over 45 million children worldwide, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to thrive.
Q. Is there a particular story of a child or family that you feel highlights the heart of Variety’s mission?
A. Please see attached two different stories that we love!

Q. This month, the Rylee + Cru Foundation grant will directly support Variety’s Guatemala Project. Can you tell us more about this initiative and the positive impact it will have?
A. The Swimming Together program in Guatemala is a pioneering initiative that creates inclusive opportunities for children and youth with disabilities ages 6-18. Through small-group adaptive swimming sessions led by trained coaches, including Paralympic swimmer Jayro Estrada, participants build motor skills, coordination, cognitive development, emotional regulation, and confidence. The program also supports families through workshops, counseling, and resources on health, rights, and inclusion, while fostering community awareness with swimming festivals that celebrate achievement and visibility. With $10,000 in support, the program will provide staffing, equipment, facility access, family engagement, and monitoring to ensure quality and sustainability. Directly benefiting 40 children and 80-100 caregivers, it breaks down long-standing barriers to healthcare, education, recreation, and inclusion for children with disabilities in Guatemala. Ultimately, Swimming Together seeks to transform lives by promoting independence, well-being, and belonging for children and their families!
Q. Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future of Variety, and how can individuals get involved in supporting your mission?
A. At Variety, we envision a world where every child, no matter their abilities or circumstances, is free to dream, explore, and achieve their greatest potential. A world where disability is not a limitation, but part of the unique story that propels children forward. Imagine a community where children who are sick or disadvantaged are no longer defined by what they cannot do, but instead given the tools and encouragement to discover all they can do. Where playgrounds, sports fields, and public spaces are designed for all kids to thrive and connect. The support of partners like Rylee + Cru makes this vision possible! Together, we are breaking barriers and empowering the next generation to live, play, and seize their full potential!
